Erin Kominsky, principal of Weaver Elementary School in Rossmoor, claimed the prize as the best-performing elementary school in Orange County when she reported on her school at the regular meeting of the Los Alamitos Unified School District Board of Education on September 13.
With an academic performance index (API) of 984, Principal Kominsky has independent validation of her claim.
STAR results show that her students’ command of academic subject material is not merely impressive, it’s almost perfect. In both science and writing, 98% of Weaver students scored as advanced or proficient.
Priority goals for the new school year include purposeful engagement; adapting instruction to close learning gaps; continued improvement in the basic vital skills of comprehension, problem solving and writing; working collabortively; and developing RTI models in grade 3 math and grade 1 ELA.
Weaver also has received new technology in the form of Elmo document cameras, Nikon digital cameras for each classroom, student-response Quizdom systems and 80 iPad 2s. The iPads came with portable docking carts.
Principal Kominsky illustrated her report with a great photo of Weaver students smiling brightly while using those iPads.
