Increased traffic justifies new signal on Lincoln in Cypress

Cypress, intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Simner Place, schedule for traffic signal

According to a staff report, the Cypress Traffic Commission received a request in May 2010 for the City to install a traffic signal on Lincoln Ave. at Sumner Place.

This is a T intersection on the east side of Forest Lawn Cemetery. The closest traffic signal to the west is at Denni St. To the east, the closest signal is Moody St.

A review of current traffic conditions by City staff determined that a signal was justified by an increase in traffic and accidents.

The Traffic Commission recommended that the installation of a signal at Lincoln and Sumner be included in a future year’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), and the City Council approved the project as part of the CIP for this fiscal year.

The City then applied for and won a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the project in the amount of $145,723.

Construction is expected to begin in March 2012 and finish in May 2012. Any costs beyond the amount of the CDBG grant will be paid for through the City’s Traffic Mitigation Funds.
