Los Alamitos Council fills commission vacancies

At a special meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Los Alamitos City Council interviewed candidates to fill vacancies on the City’s Traffic, Planning and Recreation & Cultural Arts Commission.

Each candidate was allowed an opening and a closing statement.

Between the candidate statements, each member of the City Council asked the candidate a question.

Immediately following the completion of all the interviews, Council members voted for those they thought would best fill the vacancies on each Commission.

Dave Emerson was chosen to serve on the Traffic Commission. He will replace Irma Austin, whose term expired in December 2010. Ms. Austin had agreed to continue serving on the Commission until a replacement was found.

Will Daniel and Victor Sofelkanik were selected to serve on the Planning Commission. Both were incumbents on the Planning Commission who re-applied for a new term.

Elliot Singer and Samuel Manning were chosen to serve on the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Commission. Both were incumbents on the Planning Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Commission Commission who re-applied for a new term.

Update: after reading the first comment below, I returned to the staff report submitted by Windmere Quintana and approved by Angie Avery. One page 2, under the heading Discussion, it reads in part:

At the end of December, two Commissioners’ terms expired on the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission (Samuel Manning and Elliot Singer) and two Commissioners’ terms expired on the Planning Commission (Will Daniel and Victor Sofelkanik). All incumbents have reapplied.

In addition, one Traffic Commissioner’s term (Irma Austin) expired December 2010. Commissioner Austin did not reapply for the Commission; however, she has continued to serve on the Commission and has agreed to do so until Council makes an appointment for the seat.

Additionally, the Dec. 2010 Local Appointments List for the City of Los Alamitos lists both Samuel Manning and Elliott Singer has serving on the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission with terms expiring in Dec. 2011. The same document lists both Victor Solfelkanik and Will Daniel as serving on the Planning Commission. Mr. Solfelkanik’s term is listed as expiring in July 2011. Mr. Daniel’ term is listed as expiring in Dec. 2011.

Thank you to our “unpaid proofreader” for catching the mistake.
