Musicians play to raise money to enhance church organ, fund scholarships

The following information was released by Musique Sur La Mer.

The combined musical forces of the world renowned Musique Sur la Mer Youth Symphony Orchestra from the Los Alamitos Youth Center and Holy Trinity Catholic Church of San Pedro, will join in an afternoon concert on Sunday, April 22, 3:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 1292 W. Santa Cruz St., San Pedro.

The purpose of the concert is to raise funds for enhancement of the organ at Holy Trinity and scholarships, music and equipment for the youth symphony. The concert, featuring the 50 piece full symphony orchestra under the direction of conductor, Marcy A. Sudock, with selected musicians from Holy Trinity, will highlight the beauty of the orchestra, organ, and vocal soloists. Soloists include Monsignor Joseph Brennan, tenor, Rubén Sanchez, baritone, Crystal Sepulveda, soprano, Donna Barnes, flute and Denise Peykanu, organ.

The major highlight of the program will be Andrew Lloyd Weber’s, Selections from Phantom of the Opera, featuring full symphony and vocal soloists. The program will also include Handel’s Organ Concerto in F Major and “The Trumpet Wiill Sound” (baritone solo), selections from a Telemann’s Flute Suite, Mozart’s Alleluia, (soprano solo), two organ toccatas by Gigout and Rutter, “Simple Song” from Leonard Bernstein’s Mass (tenor solo). The orchestra will be featured performing Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and Fiesta Tropicale. This will be fun for the entire family.

As a special bonus, a pre-concert program will begin at 3 p.m. when the box office opens. The pre-concert will feature selected musicians from the Musique Sur La Mer Youth Symphony Orchestra (MSLMYSO) performing solo and chamber works. Kealani Jensen, flutist, and Luke Collins, violist, local high school seniors and winners of the 2012 MSLMYSO Solo Competition will perform their winning solos Concerto in mi Minor for Flute and Orchestra, by Mercandante and J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, Prelude. The violinists from MSLMYSO will also perform selected Mariachi music!

Tickets are $20.00 in advance/$25.00 at the door. Tickets for children ages 13 and under are only $10.00. Tickets may be purchased either online at The Youth Center or during business hours from Holy Trinity Church, 1292 W. Santa Cruz St., San Pedro.
