At a recent Program Meeting of Soroptimist International of Cypress, Carolyn Coates, President and Pat Adams, Program Coordinator welcomed Luciann Maulhardt. The club learned more about Casa Youth Shelter current operations and well as the past from Mrs. Maulhardt, the Executive Director.
The vision of Myldred Jones, Casa was founded in 1978. She sold her home to start the youth shelter and local Soroptimists joined with Myldred to make the vision a reality. As one of the clubs 2011 Service Award recipients SI Cypress continues the partnership started 34 years ago.
Casa Youth Shelter’s mission is to provide temporary shelter and counseling services to youths in crisis; enabling them to come through the crisis with increased personal strength and a sense of renewal while in a supportive environment. In addition, parenting classes are provided to the parents of residents and the community at large; as well as a youth leadership program for high school students (YDP). To date, over 10,000 children have been served through the programs offered by Casa Youth Shelter.
Soroptimist is an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. The Cypress club will celebrate 30 years of service in November. For more information, visit the group’s website at www.cypresssoroptimist.org.
