The following information was released by St. Irenaeus Parish School.

On March 31, two nine-member teams of eighth graders represented St. Irenaeus Parish School at the Orange County Academic Pentathlon.

The Pentathlon is sponsored by SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union and the Orange County Department of Education.

Students from public and private schools competed as individuals and as team members in a series of five academic tests including essay, literature, mathematics, science and social studies.

Pentathlon awards were presented on April 24 in an evening ceremony held at Knott’s Berry Farm.

On April 26, St. I’s outstanding pentathletes were honored at school.

The teams earned a total of four team awards.

The Astros placed Fifth Overall, and the Novas placed Sixth Overall.

The teams tied for fourth place in the Super Quiz.

Justin Kim earned third place in the Overall Individual competition, and Patrick Davis earned sixth place in the Overall Individual competition.

Team members won an additional 25 Individual awards in specific subject areas.

The teams began preparing for the competition in January by participating in before-school study sessions, and group study sessions on the weekends.

The students were coached by St. Irenaeus teachers Mrs. Teri Northrop, Mrs. Cathy Corkhill, Ms. Stephanie Anastasia Cocca, and Sr. Mary Elizabeth Nelson.

St. Irenaeus Parish School is located at 9201 Grindlay St. in Cypress, right next door to the Cypress Senior Center.
