Seven Lady Griffins named to All-County teams

The following information was released by Los Alamitos Lacrosse Boosters.

The Los Al Girls Varsity team continues to win on and off the field, with seven girls from this season’s Southern Section Championship team earning All-County honors.

Four girls were named to the First Team, including Julie Crowell, Keaton Otake, Sophia Aragon and Kat Moretta. In addition, Grace Schmidt-Beck, Caitlin Derry and Haley Fessenden earned Second Team honors. Members of the First Team are now eligible for U.S. Lacrosse’s All-American Awards.

The Griffins placed seven girls on All-Sunset League teams as well. Top honors as the Sunset League MVP went to Keaton Otake. She was joined by Julie Crowell, Sophia Aragon and Gaby Fukumura on the First Team. Second Team All-Sunset honors went to Caitlin Derry, Haley Fessenden and Grace Schmidt-Beck.

Several team awards were also announced at the Girls Banquet held on May 22:

  • Girl’s Varsity
    Player of the Year – Keaton Otake
    Offensive MVP – Caitlin Derry
    Defensive Player of the Year – Sophia Aragon
    Unsung Hero – Meghan Cassedy
    Rookie of the Year – Dom Loney
    Scholar Athlete – Sara Leontis
  • Girl’s Junior Varsity
    Most Valuable Player – Neely Oefterling
    Coach’s Award – Jess Hansen
  • Girl’s Freshman/Sophomore
    Most Valuable Player – Emily Hansen
    Coach’s Award – Emily Jackson

Overall, the program accomplished another impressive milestone, with 54 percent of the girls in the program earning Scholar Athlete status with a GPA of 3.5 and above. This included 6 of 18 Frosh-Soph players, 8 out of 19 JV players and a whopping 19 out of 24 varsity players for a total of 33 out of 61 players in the program.
