The following information was released by the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

The Orange County Registrar of Voters announced that the deadline for submissions for the first ever Spirit of Democracy Art Competition has been extended from June 29 to July 13.

The competition, designed to recognize talented local artists, challenges artists to submit original artwork stimulated by thoughts on democracy, voting, civic engagement and volunteerism. Winners of the competition will participate in an exhibit at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA), located in Santa Ana, in August.

To date the Orange County Registrar of Voters office has received submissions ranging from elementary students to professional artists in formats varying from photography, charcoal and 3-D art.

The Spirit of Democracy Art Competition is open to all Orange County residents who are in the first grade or older. Winners will be selected by a jury panel of OCCCA members, who include artists, gallery directors, and other distinguished members of the arts community. First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention prizes will be awarded in each of three age-based categories: Grades 1-6, Grades 7-12, and Age 18 or older. A Grand Prize winner will be awarded to the overall winning entry.

Participating artists should email an image of their artwork to the Registrar of Voters office (stefanie.benvenuto@rov.ocgov.com) no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012. Additional information and samples of work submitted are located in the Community Engagement section of our website.
