Scenes from Festival Day: Before the start of the race

Cypress Festival race anthem

The Cypress 5k/10k Run/Walk sponsored by the City of Cypress takes place prior to the opening of the Festival Grounds.

Runners arrive at the Cypress Civic Center beginning at 6 a.m. to check in or register.

The race is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m.

This year, Nicole Werner sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Cypress Mayor Doug Bailey loosed the runners with a blaaat! from an air horn.

Two Cypress Police Department motor officers cleared the roadway ahead of the frontrunners.

Because timing is managed electronically with chips embedded in tags, none of the runners have to worry about an accurate race time or being slow off the start. Their time passing the starting line is automatically and electronically recorded, as is their finish time.

Results are available at active.com.

The top 3 overall finishers in 10K for both male and female received the following prizes:
1st place $1,000 male/female
2nd place $500 male/female
3rd place $250 male/female

Results for men in the 10k

Tonny Okello 29:32
Christian Hesch 29:39
Jordan Chipangama 29:44
Ahmed Osman 30:57
Raul Arcos 31:47

Results for women in the 10k

Mary Akor 33:55
Natasha Labeaud 34:06
Tanya Zeferjahn 35:09
Lilyana Morejon 36:22
Cheryl Smith 36:41

Note that the traditional balloon arch is missing. According to a City official, that is because of a shortage of helium.

The national anthem was sung prior to the start of the Cypress 5k/10k Run/Walk. In the basket with the American flag were Cypress Recreation Director June Liu, Cypress Mayor Doug Bailey, Cypress City Councilman Todd Seymore and a representative from Bandai America.
