A live power line was down on Orangewood Ave. near the intersection of Orangewood and Los Alamitos Blvd. near St. Hedwig School in the city of Los Alamitos. The cause of the damage was not immediately clear.
Drivers were trapped on Orangewood because of the danger. Los Alamitos Police, Orange County Fire Authority, and utility workers have responded to the location.
It is uncertain how long it will take to clear the power line and reopen access to Orangewood.
Update: All the students at St. Hedwig School are safe and parents are strongly advised to avoid the area for their own safety.
Motorists stuck at the school were directed to exit by the rectory driveway. A witness stated that the power pole was struck by a construction vehicle working at the nearby flood control channel.
Southern California Edison reports that nearly 600 customers are currently without power in the area of Rossmoor.
