On his last day on the job, retiring Los Alamitos Police Chief Todd Mattern was taken to lunch by his boss, City Manager Brett Plumlee. They ate at Los Alamitos Medical Center.
Meanwhile, back at City Hall, plans were coming together for one last chance for City staff and elected officials to let Chief Mattern know what they think of him.
Chelsi Wilson, Executive Assistant to City Manager Plumlee, set up the Council Chamber for an informal party.
Chief Mattern’s wife, daughter, and sister arrived.
Staff members from all departments — from Public Works to Engineering to the Police Department — gathered on the walkway connecting the Council Chamber with City Hall offices.
Mr. Plumlee kept Mrs. Wilson apprised of their progress towards the Civic Center via text messages. They parked in the lot behind City Hall… and everbody cheered when Chief Mattern came through the gate. Many, many cameras came out. (I apologize for any photos I wrecked by being in the background!)
For his part, the Chief smiled wide as he worked his way east to west down the Walk of Honor, shaking hands, hugging, and joking.
At the west end, he greeted Mayor Richard Murphy, Mayor Pro Tem Shelley Hasselbrink, and Councilman Troy Edgar.
The last hugs were given to his sister, his wife, and his daughter.
Then everybody went in to the Council Chamber for cake and conversation.
Happy retirement, Chief Mattern!
