The California Army National Guard is moving personnel around at Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.
Brig. Gen. John W. Lathrop took over as commander of the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) from Brig. Gen. Nathaniel S. Reddicks on Oct. 1 of last year. He also served as Assistant Commander of the California National Guard’s 40th Infantry Division (40th ID).
The 40th Infantry Division is headquartered at the JFTB in the brand new building on the southern end of Lexington Dr.
Orange County Breeze has now learned that Brig. Gen. Lathrop has been reassigned as Assistant Division Commander of Operations for the 40th ID, effective Feb. 1. He retains his position as Base Commander, and also as Deputy Commander (South) of the California Army National Guard.
Col. Kelly A. Fisher became Assistant Division Command of Support for the 40th Infantry Division, effective Feb. 1. She will also take on acting duties as Senior Command of the JFTB, and Deputy Commander (South) of the California Army National Guard.
Brig. Gen. Mark G. Malanka assumed command of the 40th Infantry Division effective Feb. 1. He has served over 29 years in the California Army National Guard. He will lead the 40th ID through Warfighter 17-05, then deploy with the Division in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
The 40th Infantry Division will see its first combat deployment since the Korean War under Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, which followed Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Brig. Gen. Lathrop has been chosen as leader of the division Train Advise Assist Command (TAAC) in the first rotation. Col. Fisher will deploy as TACC leader in the second rotation.
