The Democrat controlled Assembly Committee on Public Safety killed AB 1252, Travis Allen’s legislation to defund sanctuary cities, on a party line vote.
“Protecting Californians from crime should always be our government’s top priority,” said Assemblyman Travis Allen. “Stopping sanctuary cities would ensure that Californians will be protected from dangerous criminals being released into our communities and empower our law enforcement to keep us safe. Unfortunately the California Democrats have chosen sheltering criminals in our state illegally over the safety of California citizens.”
“Sanctuary city policies endanger all Californians – anyone denying that reality is ignoring the data,” said Allen. According to a 2015 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) report:
- Illegal immigrants account for 37.6 percent of federal sentences nationwide
- Illegal immigrants comprise 12 percent of murder sentences, 20 percent of kidnapping sentences and 16 percent of drug trafficking sentences
- In California, illegal immigrants account for over 12 percent of the state’s prison population
- An estimated 650 illegal immigrant criminal offenders are released into California’s communities every month in violation of transfer requests into federal custody
AB 1252 would have denied state funds to sanctuary cities, prohibited state funds from being used to defend criminal illegal immigrants, and directed state and local law enforcement to fully cooperate with federal efforts to apprehend illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes.
“Californians have great compassion toward law abiding legal immigrants who have come to our state to work hard and build a better life. But sheltering foreign criminals who are here illegally creates a very real danger for all our communities, and California has a duty to abide by federal law and work with federal authorities for the safety of all of our citizens.”
