The Academic Senate passed a resolution on Thursday, March 8 in support of two student walkouts: the first on March 14th marking one month since the Parkland, FL shooting; the second on April 20th marking the anniversary of the Columbine shooting.
“I know this is a sensitive and even controversial topic, and I want to underscore that the Senate resolution in no way compels any student or faculty member to participate in the walkouts,” Academic Senate President Bryan Seiling said. “We want to respect the feelings of all of our students, faculty, staff, and administration.”
In describing the Academic Senate resolution, Seiling notes that participation comes in various forms and he emphasized that individual faculty members will elect to participate or not. He added that classroom discussions are at least as important as the walkout itself. Finally, Seiling reminded that Global Citizenship is one of Cypress College’s Institutional Learning Outcomes.
