The La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) installed new officers for the 2018-2019 year at 6:00 p.m. on May 31, 2018, at the Peking Wok Restaurant in Cerritos. Installing Officer Thea Siegel started the evening by thanking the entire members of the 2017-2018 board for their hard work this year. She especially thanked the five members on the board for serving as President Pro Tem for two months at a time. She presented gifts from the five Presidents pro Tem to the outgoing appointed board members for their service.
Thea then began the Installation of Officers for 2018-2019 by using Harriet Moses’ name as her theme.
As Moses led his people, as President, Harriet would lead the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW on a new journey, but she would not have to wander in the desert of L.A. for 40 years. She presented Harriet with supplies to support her on her journey including a staff to support her, a light to light her way, and an “anti-plague potion” to help her should trouble arise. She explained the duties of the president of the branch and Harriet accepted the responsibilities of the office of president.
Thea then explained the responsibilities of each of the other elected board members and presented each officer with items related to their office. Secretary Christine Taxier received a piece of parchment and a quill to record minutes, and Treasurer Marilyn Forsstrom received few gold coins and was reminded to keep accurate financial records. Program V.P.’s Brenda Hicks and Beverly Zwick received some clay tablets and chalk to help write topics of interest for programs, and AAUW Fund VP Joan Pylman received a box to collect monies for the AAUW Fund. They all accepted their responsibilities and were sworn into their offices.
Program V.P Diane Hutson received a slate and chalk, and Membership V.P.’s Peggy Brutsche and Sue Solomon received stuffed sheepdogs to keep the AAUW flock together. They were not available on May 31st, but all three members were sworn into their respective office on June 9, 2018, and received items related to their offices.
As part of the program, Named Grant Honoree Committee members Tobi Balma and Dorothy Edwards presented Christine Taxier with a certificate from AAUW National upon her selection as the La Palma-Cerritos Branch Named Grant Honoree. She was selected for this honor for her outstanding service to the branch “above and beyond the call of duty.”
Many past-presidents of the branch and current branch members were present at the Installation Dinner and were ready to support the new president. The new elected board is working with appointed board members and leaders of the branch’s interest groups to plan interesting new programs and service activities. With the advice and assistance of members, they hope to reach their goals and also enjoy fun and fellowship with each other.
The La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the AAUW works to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. Members usually meets on the third Thursdays of the month alternating between evenings and afternoons and at different venues according to availability of meeting rooms. The first meeting of the new AAUW year will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at the Cerritos Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Persons interested in joining the La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the AAUW can contact President Harriet Moses at 714-994-1487 for more information.
