The first official summer heat wave of 2018 offers a good chance to chill in the shade on the patio, catch some ocean breezes, and enjoy friends and family.
Picture yourself on a lounge chair, a chilled beverage in hand, a light breeze from the south in your face, with congenial folks settled around you on cushioned chairs. Good times.
Here are some items we’ve come across to help things along!
Chilling on the patio calls for snacks and cool drinks.
If you enjoy flavored waters, consider Sipp, a non-alcoholic bubbly beverage with fresh organic flavors that works equally well as a cocktail mixer or to drink out-of-hand.
Tired of aggressive soda pop flavors? You’ll appreciate the subtle tingle of Sipp’s six natural flavors: Zesty Orange, Ginger Blossom, Mojo Berry, Lemon Flower, Ruby Rose and Summer Pear.
My own favorite flavors are Zesty Orange, Mojo Berry, and Ruby Rose.
Cocktails, anyone? Blackberry Mint leans naturally into a Margarita with Sipp’s Mojo Berry and some tequila. Or settle back on the lounger holding a Pear Vanilla Cocktail concocted from Sipp’s Summer Pear and vanilla vodka.
Founder, president, and mixologist Beth Wilson-Parentice provides recipes at the company’s website.
Available through Amazon, and at select brick-and-mortar retailers like Target. Sipp comes packaged in either twelve-ounce bottles (100 calories) or 10½-ounce cans (88 calories). (I like the bottles better.)
Whether you chill at the beach, or on your back patio, poolside, or at an air-conditioned mall, you will want stylish footwear to keep your feet cool and breezy.
Showaflops are a stylish and practical solutions for women, men, and children. Beachgoers, students heading back to the dorms, and apartment-dwellers hitting the courtyard pool will appreciate the drainage holes to sluice water away while keeping feet off germ-laden public areas. The sandals have antimicrobials built right in!
Are you a gym rat who hits the showers before leaving for work? The slip-resistant soles will keep you upright and baby your dogs after hard workouts.
Designs range from pert and pretty like my favorite, Moroccan, to men’s basic black or tire track, to boys’ digital camo, to girls’ sand and gold stars.
There are even Showabags available in coordinating colors, complete with side pockets to hold your Showaflops!
Showaflops are available to order directly online. Get your flop on!
While outdoor chilling in Southern California is noticeably less crowded with bugs than other places, you still might want to ward off the annoying buzzers and biters.
You don’t want to send your friends and family off with an accidental case of West Nile Virus!
A bug-zapping lantern is one solution.
Another is applying insect repellent like Deet.
But some people don’t enjoy listening as the bug-zapper works. Others want to avoid possible health side effects such as rashes, skin irritation, numb or burning lips, nausea, headaches, dizziness and difficulty concentrating said to be caused by chemical insect repellents.
For a different line of defense — one that is guaranteed plant-based, provides a pleasant atmosphere, and is Deet-free — you can try Murphy’s Naturals mosquito repellent incense. Its five scents — rosemary, peppermint, citronella, lemongrass, and cedarwood — are custom-made for relaxation.
Each tube contains twelve mosquito-repellent incense sticks. Each incense stick burns for up to 2½ hours, and provides protection against mosquitos for a radius of about twelve feet. The incense burns cleanly, so you don’t need to worry about setting up a protective party perimeter.
(Do follow directions for safe use! The incense sticks are intended for outdoor use only and should not be left to burn unattended. Keep out of reach of children and pets!)
This all-natural solution to waving off mosquitos is available online through The Grommet, which not coincidentally also sells a ceramic incense stick holder that works quite well with the incense sticks.
