A special election was held yesterday to replace disgraced Tony Mendoza as State Senator in the 32nd District.
The 2010 Census counted the District as 48.86% registered Democrats, 28.36% registered Republicans, and 18.84% decline-to-state.The Census reported that the population was 60.92% Hispanic, 19.17% non-Hispanic White, and 14.35% non-Hispanic Asian.
As of 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, Vanessa Delgado (D) led Rita Topalian (R) 51.7% to 48.3%.
The big difference is Delgado’s lead in the portion of the District in Los Angeles County, which comprises the majority of that District. This is another example of how redistricting after the 2010 Census took bites out of the periphery of (conservative) Orange County in order to drown them in larger buckets of progressive votes in neighboring counties.
