In the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against California Democratic Party Chair Eric Bauman, Orange County Young Democrats (“OCYD”) announced it will honor the women who courageously spoke out last year against sexual harassment and abuse in Orange County Democratic Politics at the 2018 Obama Awards.
Irlanda Martinez, Adriana Cortez-Luna, and Erin Roberts will accept the “OC Silence Breaker Award” on Saturday, December 8th at the Newport Beach Civic Center. In announcing the honorees, OCYD Chair Danielle Serbin issued the following statement:
“In honoring these women, we are sending a clear message to the Democratic Political community: sexual harassment and assault have no place in our politics. Those who are brave enough to speak out are nothing short of heroes. It takes an incredible amount of courage – and often re-traumatization – to come forward, especially against entrenched political bosses. Our community is stronger because these women bravely shared their stories, and we commend the young staffers who are brave enough to speak out against – or anonymously report – an endemic culture of harassment.”
In October of 2017, multiple young women in Orange County politics came forward with stories of sexual harassment and assault against top Democratic and labor leaders. OCYD issued a statement in solidarity and called for the immediate removal of these individuals. The men were subsequently removed from their positions of power.
