Heavily-favored Just Grazed Me cruised to an easy win in her Los Alamitos debut in the $58,110 feature Friday.
A 3-year-old daughter of Grazen owned by breeder Nick Alexander, Just Grazed Me broke alertly from the inside, quickly engaged longshot Sly Humor for the early lead, easily disposed of that rival, then drew clear in the final quarter of a mile while being geared down near the wire by jockey Tyler Baze.
Out of the Cuvee mare Fairway Road, the gray filly, who is trained by Phil D’Amato, prevailed by four lengths over Family Girl and five others while completing six furlongs in 1:08.53.
The win was the third in six starts for Just Grazed Me, who has yet to finish worse than second, and pushed her bankroll to $208,260. She returned $3, $2.40 and $2.10 as the 1-2 choice.
The California bred could step into Grade I company for the first time in her next start. She is being considered for the $300,000 La Brea Stakes, a seven-furlong contest that will be run Dec. 26 at Santa Anita.
Family Girl, who had won her previous two starts at Los Alamitos, paid $3.20 and $2.60 as the 4-1 second choice while finishing a half-length in front of 25-1 shot Time for Ebby. The show price on Time for Ebby was $4.20.
Todos Santos, Sly Humor, Silken Spy and D D’s Lute completed the order of finish. Heart of the Nile was scratched.
Racing resumes Saturday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 12:30 p.m.
The nine-race program features a pair of Grade I races for 2-year-olds – the $300,000 Starlet for fillies and the $300,000 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity. Both are at 1 1/16 miles.
The Futurity, which is headed by the undefeated Improbable, will go as the fifth race with a scheduled post time of 2:28 while the Starlet is the seventh race and is slated to be run at 3:28.
After breaking his maiden going six furlongs at Santa Anita Sept. 29, Improbable, a City Zip colt trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert for a partnership, stretched out to a mile and won the Street Sense Stakes by 7 ¼ lengths Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs. He is the 6-5 choice in the Futurity, a race Baffert has won four times in a row at Los Alamitos.
Chasing Yesterday, a half-sister to 2015 Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year American Pharoah, is the 9-5 favorite in the Starlet for Baffert and breeder Summer Wind Equine.
