Weekly message from Neighborhood Church: What kind of neighbor favor could you do?

Colossians 3:14 And above all these, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

I was inspired by my son-in-law, Jericho, and his family in how they are seeking to care for those around them. If you know Jericho, you would know he is a kind, people-oriented man who loves God and desires to connect and help others. So, he encouraged and got his little family to do what he called ‘neighbor favors.’ They learned one family was stressed with just the daily realities of making dinner so they ordered food to be delivered one evening. Another time they had the kids make some drawings and ‘get well’ notes and gave them to an older couple who were recovering from a surgery. They have also sent encouraging cards, notes, and gift cards to some who are sick. One time, they brought coffee to a new parent who was experiencing a few sleepless nights. They have also given Target gift cards, toys, balloons to a young family who is stuck inside due to quarantine. They have bought and delivered groceries to those who are having trouble getting out, and of course, blessed people with toilet paper. They try to include their whole family in these initiated contacts of love, these ‘neighbor favors.’

In this time of isolation and restrictions. due to this annoying coronavirus, these are some fun and creative ways to connect and bless others. We need that connection. Our culture tends to keep us isolated anyway and so when the few opportunities of connection get limited, it’s vital we find other ways. We can help by doing some ‘neighbor favors.’ What kind of neighbor favor could you do?

Sure, it involves us getting to know or being aware of needs and what might be helpful to others.

Philippians 2:4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Yes, it takes some effort and expense, but it does so much for that other person and for us. We are encouraged and feel better when we reach out in kindness to others.

Acts 20:35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

We gain a great sense of purpose and truly help others. Who knows, your neighbor favor may be that perfect blessing that holds another back from depression, able to make a wiser decision, stop that destructive behavior, be a tangible example that someone cares and a clear statement that they are not invisible. As well, a neighbor favor is living out Jesus’ and the Bible’s challenge and command to love our neighbors.

Matthew 22:39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Galatians 5:14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

1 Corinthians 16:14 Let all that you do be done in love.

So, what kind of neighbor favor could you do? Get creative. Take the initiative to make this happen. You are uniquely placed in the neighborhood you are in by God to bless those around you. So, what could you do? Who are you thinking of right now? It does not have to be something huge. Give it a try. With all the negative news and things going on, your neighbor favor could bring on some joy, a smile, a sense of the good-will of humanity, all because you stepped out with a neighbor favor.
