I-405 Improvement Project Construction Alert: Week of Feb. 11

Construction Activities

Fairview Road

What: Crews are scheduled to shift traffic to the west side of the Fairview Road bridge Saturday, Feb. 9 in anticipation of the upcoming partial demolition of the bridge.

Where: The Fairview Road bridge will be closed from South Coast Drive to McCormack Lane for crews to restripe lanes and install temporary concrete barriers. The northbound and southbound Fairview Road on- and off-ramps, and the northbound SR-73 off-ramp will also be closed. Detours will be in place to navigate motorists around the closure.

Additional Closure:

The left turn lane from northbound Fairview Road to the northbound I-405 on-ramp will be closed for the duration of the first phase of construction of the bridge. This closure will be in place for approximately 12 months.

When: The Fairview Road bridge and the on- and off-ramps will be closed as early as 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 to 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10.

Why: As part of the I-405 Improvement Project, which adds a general purpose lane and a tolled Express Lane facility in each direction, 18 bridges must be replaced.

Fairview Road Detour

Fairview Road -> Baker Street -> Harbor Boulevard -> Southcoast Drive or Sunflower Avenue -> Fairview Road

Magnolia Street

What: Settlement fill construction
Where: Adjacent to the Magnolia Street bridge, on the northbound side of I-405.
When: 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11 through Wednesday, Feb. 13

Crews will mobilize equipment and haul fill material behind lane closures, which can only be done at night.

Why: These large piles of dirt will remain in place for up to three months to compact the soil beneath them for future bridge support structures.

Westminster Boulevard

What: Electrical work
Where: Westminster Boulevard, between Springdale Street and Edwards Street.

  • Westminster Boulevard will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Edwards Street and Springdale Street.
  • Northbound Springdale Steet will be reduced to one lane between Mahogany Avenue and Westminster Boulevard.

When: 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 through Friday, Feb. 15. Please note that this work was rescheduled due to the rain.
Why: This work will be done in advance of shifting traffic to one side of the bridge and the bridge’s partial demolition anticipated in March.

Bolsa Chica Road

What: Settlement fill construction
Where: Adjacent to the Bolsa Chica Road bridge, on the northbound and southbound sides of I-405.
When:

  • 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays through Friday, Feb. 22
  • 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. on weekdays through Friday, Feb. 22

Crews will mobilize equipment and haul fill material behind lane closures, which can only be done at night.

Why: These large piles of dirt will remain in place for up to three months to compact the soil beneath them for future bridge support structures.

Wall Construction Activities

Milan Street

What: Crews are demolishing the existing I-405 sound wall and sidewalk adjacent to Milan Street.

A temporary noise barrier will be installed while the new sound wall is under construction.
The new sound wall will be approximately 13 feet high on the Milan Street side of the wall.
A new sidewalk also will be constructed.

Please be advised that this work may be loud.

Where: Milan Street, between approximately Stratford Avenue and 200 feet south of Lowell Circle
When: Ongoing, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays, demolition of the sound wall and sidewalk; construction of the new sound wall and sidewalk.

Some work may be done at night; construction will take up to four months to complete.

Note: Dates and times may change due to unforeseen operational factors or inclement weather.

Pile Installation Activities

Goldenwest Street

What: Daytime pile installation
Where: Adjacent to Goldenwest Street, on the northbound and southbound sides of I-405.
When: Ongoing 6:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays
Why: Pile installation is necessary to construct the foundation of the new Goldenwest Street bridge.

McFadden Avenue

What: Daytime pile installation
Where: Adjacent to McFadden Avenue, on the southbound side of I-405.
When: Ongoing, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays
Why: Pile installation is necessary to construct the foundation of the new McFadden Avenue bridge.
