I-405 Improvement Project Construction Alert: Week of Feb. 25

Bridge Demolition Activities

Fairview Road

What: Partial demolition of the Fairview Road bridge. Crews will demolish a portion of the bridge over northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) I-405.
Where: The Fairview Road bridge over NB and SB I-405. The freeway will be closed in both directions from Fairview Road to SR-73.

Additional Closures

  • Fairview Road will be closed from South Coast Drive to McCormack Lane
  • NB SR-73 to NB I-405 Connector will be closed.
  • NB I-405 Off-Ramp to Susan will be closed.
  • NB I-405 Off-Ramp to Harbor will be closed.
  • NB I-405 On-Ramp from Fairview Road will be closed.
  • SB I-405 to SB SR-73 will be closed.
  • SB I-405 On-Ramp from Fairview Road will be closed.
  • SB SR-73 On-Ramp from Fairview Road will be closed.

Detours will be in place to navigate motorists around the closures.

All closures and detours will be included next week in our interactive map, on our closure list, and on a special construction alert.

When: As early as 11 p.m. Saturday, March 2, to 9 a.m. Sunday, March 3, and 11 p.m. Saturday, March 9 to 9 a.m. Sunday, March 10.

Construction Activities

Bolsa Avenue

What: Crews are scheduled to shift traffic to the north side of the Bolsa Avenue bridge in early March, in anticipation of the upcoming partial demolition of the bridge.
Where: Bolsa Avenue will be closed from Goldenwest Street to Chestnut Street to allow crews to restripe lanes and install temporary concrete barriers. The northbound and southbound I-405 loop off-ramps to Bolsa Avenue, and southbound I-405 on-ramp will also be closed.
When: Anticipated in early March

Detour
Eastbound: Bolsa Avenue -> Goldenwest Street -> Hazard Avenue -> Hoover Street or Beach Boulevard -> Bolsa Avenue
Westbound: Bolsa Avenue -> Beach Boulevard -> Hazard Avenue -> Goldenwest Street -> Bolsa Avenue

Slater Avenue

What: Concrete work for the new bridge abutment.
Where: Adjacent to Slater Avenue, on the northbound side of I-405.
When: As early as 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23
Why: Abutments are structures that will support the ends of the new Slater Avenue bridge.

Goldenwest Street

What: Removal of center median
Where: Center median of Goldenwest Street south of Westminster Mall Road. Goldenwest Street will be reduced to two lanes in each direction between Georgetowwn Avenue and Sowell Avenue.

Additional Lane Closures:

SB Goldenwest Street will be reduced to one lane on the bridge.
Left turns will be restricted at these locations:
SB Goldenwest Street at Bolsa Avenue;
SB Goldenwest Street at Georgetown Avenue;
NB Goldenwest Street at Bolsa Avenue; and
NB Goldenwest Street at Sowell Avenue.

When: As early as 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. Round-the-clock lane reductions will be in place on the bridge and on Goldenwest Street for this time period.
Why: The median is being removed to make room for the traffic shift on the bridge.

Bolsa Chica Road

What: Settlement fill construction
Where: Adjacent to the Bolsa Chica Road bridge, on the northbound and southbound sides of I-405.
When: 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays, Monday, Feb. 25 through Friday, March 8
10 p.m. – 5 a.m. on weekdays, Monday, Feb. 25 through Friday, March 8

A portion of this work will require lane closures, which can only be done at night.

Why: These large piles of dirt will remain in place for up to three months to compact the soil beneath them for future bridge support structures.

Pile Installation Activities

Magnolia Street

What: Nighttime pile installation for temporary shoring
Where: Adjacent to Magnolia Street, on the NB and SB sides of I-405.
Closures:

Magnolia Street will be closed between Warner Avenue and Heil Avenue
NB and SB I-405 on-ramps from Magnolia Street will be closed

Approved detours will be in place to navigate motorists around the closures.

Warner Avenue will be open for local access.

When: As early as 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, through Friday, March 1
Why: Temporary shoring supports construction of the new Magnolia Street bridge.
Detour Warner Avenue -> Bushard Street -> Edinger Avenue -> Beach Boulevard

Fairview Road

What: Concrete-cutting activities
Where: On the east side of the Fairview Road bridge over I-405 and near the NB I-405 off-ramp
When: As early as 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25 and Tuesday, Feb. 26
Why: Concrete cutting is necessary to remove pavement prior the Fairview Road bridge partial demolition.

Fairview Road

What: Daytime pile installation for temporary shoring
Where: On the east side of the Fairview Road bridge over I-405.
When: As early as 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, through Friday, March 1
Why: Temporary shoring supports construction of the new Fairview Road bridge.

Goldenwest Street

What: Nighttime and daytime pile installation
Where: Adjacent to Goldenwest Street, on the northbound and southbound sides of I-405. Crews will also be working near the center median columns on the freeway, behind lane closures.
When:
7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Feb. 25, through March 9 on weekdays and Saturdays
10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Feb. 25, through March 9 on weekdays and Saturdays
Why: Pile installation is necessary to construct the foundation of the new Goldenwest Street bridge.

McFadden Avenue

What: Daytime pile installation
Where: Adjacent to McFadden Avenue, on the SB side of I-405.
When: Ongoing, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays
Why: Pile installation is necessary to construct the foundation of the new McFadden Avenue bridge.

Wall Construction Activities

Milan Street

What: Crews will remove demolished wall material.

  • Crews are demolishing the existing I-405 sound wall and sidewalk adjacent to Milan Street.
  • A temporary noise barrier has been installed while the new sound wall is under construction.
  • The new sound wall will be approximately 13 feet high on the Milan Street side of the wall.
  • A new sidewalk also will be constructed.

Where: Milan Street, between approximately Stratford Avenue and 200 feet south of Lowell Circle.
When: Ongoing, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays
