The public is invited to come to the meeting of the La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Thursday, March 21, 2019, at Cerritos Park East, 13234 East 166th Street, Cerritos, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guest speaker for the evening will be AAUW member Jackie Shahzadi who will be discussing International Women’s Issues. There will be refreshments and a social time starting at 6:30 p.m. prior to Jackie’s speech and a short business meeting after her speech.
Jackie has been an active member of the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW for over 30 years. She is a charter member of Women Graduates—USA. She also belongs to Servas, an international peace and friendship organization and on the board of VGIF, an international charity providing grants to projects for women and girls in developing countries. She has attended the last nine Graduate Women International conferences around the world. In 2015, Jackie led the Women and Leadership delegation to Vietnam with Global Engagement Institute, the fourth such study tour she has led to various nations.
Jackie retired, in 2017, as Campus College Chair of the College of Humanities and Sciences for the Southern California Campus of the University of Phoenix, where she continues to serve as a part-time faculty member. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Southern California.
Jackie’s interest in international affairs began with her 12-year residence in pre-revolutionary Iran. She is co-author with her husband of a book about their life in Iran, Goldoon and Professor: Memoirs and Reflections of a Bicultural Marriage. Jackie currently lives in Norwalk, California and has been married to Bahman for 51 years.
Guests are welcome to come, meet Jackie, ask questions about her life abroad, and learn about different issues that international women are concerned about at this time such as Advocacy and Support for Refugees and Migrant Women Girls, and Action Against Human Trafficking.
The La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the AAUW usually meets on the third Thursday of the month at Cerritos Park East from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Persons who are interested in joining the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW can contact Membership Co-VP Sue Solomon at 562-926-2746. Graduates who hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university are eligible to join the AAUW.
