I-405 Improvement Project Construction Alert: Week of March 4

Bridge Demolition Activities

Fairview Road

Fairview Road Partial Demolition has been rescheduled to March 9 due to the rain.

What: Partial demolition of the Fairview Road bridge. Crews will demolish a portion of the bridge over northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) I-405.
Where: The Fairview Road bridge over NB and SB I-405. The freeway will be closed in both directions from Fairview Road to SR-73.

Additional Closures

  • Fairview Road will be closed from South Coast Drive to McCormack Lane
  • NB SR-73 to NB I-405 Connector will be closed.
  • NB I-405 Off-Ramp to Susan will be closed.
  • NB I-405 Off-Ramp to Harbor will be closed.
  • NB I-405 On-Ramp from Fairview Road will be closed.
  • SB I-405 to SB SR-73 will be closed.
  • SB I-405 On-Ramp from Fairview Road will be closed.
  • SB SR-73 On-Ramp from Fairview Road will be closed.

Detours will be in place to navigate motorists around the closures.

When: As early as 10 p.m. Saturday, March 9, to 9 a.m. Sunday, March 10, and as early as 10 p.m. Saturday, March 16, to 9 a.m. Sunday, March 17.

Construction Activities

Goldenwest Street

What: Crews are scheduled to complete the Goldenwest Street bridge traffic shift.
Where: Goldenwest Street will be closed from Georgetown Avenue to Santee Avenue to allow crews to restripe lanes and install temporary concrete barriers.

The following traffic conditions will remain in place for approximately 12 months:

  • NB Goldenwest Street left-turn lanes onto Bolsa Avenue will be reduced to one lane.
  • The left-turn lane onto Westminster Mall Road will be closed.
  • The left-turn lane from Westminster Mall Road onto Goldenwest Street will remain open.

When: As early as 10 p.m. Friday, March 8, to 6 a.m. Saturday, March 9

Detours Southbound Goldenwest Street

Goldenwest Street -> Westminster Boulevard -> Edwards Street -> McFadden Avenue -> Goldenwest Street
Goldenwest Street -> Hazard Avenue -> Beach Boulevard -> Edinger Avenue -> Goldenwest Street

Northbound Goldenwest Street

Goldenwest Street -> Edinger Avenue -> Beach Boulevard -> Hazard Avenue -> Goldenwest Street
Goldenwest Street -> McFadden Avenue -> Edwards Street -> Westminster Boulevard -> Goldenwest Street

Bolsa Avenue

What: Crews are scheduled to shift traffic to the north side of the Bolsa Avenue bridge in early March, in anticipation of the upcoming partial demolition of the bridge.
Where: Bolsa Avenue will be closed from Goldenwest Street to Chestnut Street to allow crews to restripe lanes and install temporary concrete barriers. The northbound and southbound I-405 loop off-ramps to Bolsa Avenue, and southbound I-405 on-ramp will also be closed.
When: As early as 10 p.m. Monday, March 11, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, March 12

Detour
Eastbound: Bolsa Avenue -> Goldenwest Street -> Hazard Avenue -> Hoover Street or Beach Boulevard -> Bolsa Avenue
Westbound: Bolsa Avenue -> Beach Boulevard -> Hazard Avenue -> Goldenwest Street -> Bolsa Avenue

McFadden Avenue

What: Concrete placement
Where: Adjacent to McFadden Avenue, on the NB side of I-405.
When: As early as 8 p.m. Monday, March 4, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, March 5
Why: Concrete is used to construct the new McFadden Avenue bridge.

Bolsa Chica Road

What: Settlement fill construction and pile installation for shoring
Where: Adjacent to the Bolsa Chica Road bridge, on the northbound and southbound sides of I-405.
When: As early as 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, March 15 on weekdays
Why: These large piles of dirt will remain in place for up to three months to compact the soil beneath them for future bridge support structures.

Pile Installation Activities

Magnolia Street

What: Nighttime pile installation for temporary shoring
Where: Adjacent to Magnolia Street, on the NB and SB sides of I-405.
Closures:

  • Magnolia Street will be closed between Warner Avenue and Heil Avenue
  • NB and SB I-405 on-ramps from Magnolia Street will be closed

Approved detours will be in place to navigate motorists around the closures.

Warner Avenue will be open for local access.

The following traffic condition will remain in place for approximately 10 months:

  • NB Magnolia Street left-turn lane onto Heil Avenue will be closed.

When: As early as 10 p.m. Monday, March 4, to 6 a.m. Tuesday, March 5
Why: Temporary shoring supports construction of the new Magnolia Street bridge.
Detour: Warner Avenue -> Bushard Street -> Edinger Avenue -> Beach Boulevard

Bolsa Chica Road

What: Nighttime and daytime pile installation
Where: Crews will be working near the center median columns on the freeway, behind lane closures.
When: As early as 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 7, through Friday, March 29 on weekdays
As early as 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, March 7, through Friday, March 29 on weekdays
A portion of this work may require lane closures, which can only be done at night.
Why: Pile installation is necessary to construct the foundation of the new Bolsa Chica Road bridge.

Goldenwest Street

What: Nighttime and daytime pile installation
Where: Adjacent to Goldenwest Street, on the northbound and southbound sides of I-405. Crews will also be working near the center median columns on the freeway, behind lane closures.
When: 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. ongoing, through March 9 on weekdays and Saturdays
10 p.m. – 5 a.m. ongoing, through March 9 on weekdays and Saturdays
Why: Pile installation is necessary to construct the foundation of the new Goldenwest Street bridge.

McFadden Avenue

What: Daytime pile installation
Where: Adjacent to McFadden Avenue, on the SB side of I-405.
When: Ongoing, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays
Why: Pile installation is necessary to construct the foundation of the new McFadden Avenue bridge.

Wall Construction Activities

Milan Street

What: Crews will remove demolished wall material.
Crews are demolishing the existing I-405 sound wall and sidewalk adjacent to Milan Street.

A temporary noise barrier has been installed while the new sound wall is under construction.
The new sound wall will be approximately 13 feet high on the Milan Street side of the wall.
A new sidewalk also will be constructed.

Where: Milan Street, between approximately Stratford Avenue and 200 feet south of Lowell Circle.
When: Ongoing, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays
