Rep. Harley Rouda announces field hearing on nuclear waste, calls for federal action

At a joint press conference with Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) outside the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), Congressman Harley Rouda (CA-48), chair of the Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Environment, announced his intention to convene a field hearing on nuclear power and waste storage this Summer in a community affected by SONGS.

Said Rouda, “All Southern Californians live in the shadow of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, and I am deeply concerned with the risks spent nuclear fuel poses to surrounding communities. Whether it’s the question of how to store nuclear waste, or how to prevent a full-scale disaster, we need to investigate and determine how, or whether to move forward with nuclear power.

“Storing spent nuclear fuel on site at San Onofre indefinitely is unworkable, and unsafe. It’s time for the federal government to propose and implement a long term solution for safe storage of nuclear waste.”

The press conference followed a three-hour comprehensive site tour of SONGS by the operator, Southern California Edison (SCE), joined by Rep. Levin.
