OVSD Language Learner staff honored at County event

The Ocean View School District (OVSD) proudly congratulates its two nominees in the 7th Annual Language Learner Celebration, recently hosted by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE). This year's outstanding individuals who make significant contributions advocating for language learners are Sara Ostovarpour, Teacher at Marine View Middle School, and Guadalupe Castillo, English Learner (EL) Assistant at College View Elementary School.

Mrs. Ostovarpour teaches English Language Arts & English Language Development to approximately 220 Marine View students. She provides engaging literacy support and is a strong advocate for English Learners as evidenced by their growth and success on the Smarter Balanced Assessment and District Reclassification Rates. Dedicated to teaching students how to think critically, collaborate, and reflect on their own learning, Mrs. Ostovarpour also makes personal connections that positively contribute to her students’ social-emotional and academic success. She strives to make students feel valued and encouraged to succeed, because they know she truly cares about them.

Mrs. Castillo inspires EL students and staff by connecting with them using her own experiences, since she grew up as an EL student herself. She is a tireless supporter, always advocating for each student as she works with educators to provide powerful instruction for a positive impact on student success. Mrs. Castillo provides proactive communication to parents, and serves as a knowledgeable role model on the EL team by providing training geared to increase language acquisition with newcomers, as well as using research-based language programs. According to her nomination, she is patient, kind, caring, engaging, and creates a safe learning environment for students.
