Centralia Elementary School District to offer free universal preschool at two sites

At the May 8, 2019 meeting, the Centralia Elementary School District (CESD) Governing Board was presented a proposal to provide free, Universal Preschool to three and four-year old preschoolers residing in the Centralia School and Danbrook School attendance boundaries. The Governing Board unanimously approved the implementation of the program starting with the 2019-20 school year.

Board President Elizabeth Gonzalez stated, “I am very proud that our Board has voted to proceed with Universal Preschool at Centralia and Danbrook Schools. Our Board believes strongly that a quality preschool experience should be made available where the need exists, and this is the right thing to do for these communities.”

Following a year-long study, two schools were identified for the program. Centralia and Danbrook Schools, located in west Anaheim, have populations who present a clear need for an equitable early learning intervention. Both schools have over 90% who qualify for free or reduced lunch, the highest number of students designated as English learners and the highest percentage of students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Offering Universal Preschool at these sites will give these students a gift of time to learn English, develop strong academic skills and gain school readiness.

“Centralia has a proven history of making forward-thinking decisions. For more than a decade, we have offered all-day kindergarten at these two schools to give students more time in an academic setting to be immersed in English and to develop school readiness skills” shared Superintendent Norma Martinez.

She continued, “Success, including college and career readiness, starts with high quality early learning opportunities.  I am proud of the strong foundation we offer to the children in our district. Today, I am particularly proud that our Governing Board has taken this bold action to make our exceptional high-quality preschool program available at no cost to our Centralia and Danbrook School communities. Through these strong foundations, we are creating successful students and strong communities.”

To celebrate this program announcement, the Centralia School District will be hosting a kick-off assembly hosted by Danbrook School on May 17, 2019 at 9 a.m.
