Rep. Harley Rouda (CA-48), issued the following statement this evening on the passage of H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act:
“Today, I voted to protect hard-working and tax-paying Orange County community members. The American Dream and Promise Act gives public servants, laborers, entrepreneurs, and students– our neighbors in CA-48– the opportunity to live and work in the United States without the constant fear of deportation.
All Americans should be proud of H.R. 6’s passage– it improves public safety, stimulates our economy, and ends the shameful practice of using people’s immigration status as political leverage.
Passage of H.R. 6 does not change my concerns about the southern border. I support improving border and port security by funding the more than 3,000 customs officer vacancies and utilizing modern technology to scan for drugs, weapons, and other dangerous contraband.
This bill is the only the first step in fixing our broken immigration system. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the next step to secure our borders, protect our neighbors, and expand the American dream.”
