On Saturday, August 17, more than 120 volunteers from Foresters Financial, Longfellow Elementary School and the Long Beach community joined KaBOOM! to build a Multi-Sport Court at Longfellow Elementary School. The new space will help extend childhood by providing play and activity opportunities to a broader age range of kids.
Volunteers constructed the Multi-Sport Court from start to finish and transformed the area into a permanent space to play a variety of sports, including volleyball, soccer and tennis, serving thousands of kids in Long Beach over its lifetime.
“After many years of planning and dreaming, we are thrilled to turn our blacktop into an inviting place to play for kids of all ages,” said Mary Yung, Longfellow PTA President. “Not only will our students and neighborhood families have a place to play soccer during recess and on weekends and holidays, our teachers will now have facilities to teach volleyball, tennis, and other skills as well. We are so grateful to Foresters and KaBOOM! for making this playground dream a reality.”
Having a safe place to play is an important part of childhood development. But as kids grow older, many experience challenges that make it difficult to gather, for mental and physical activity and just be kids. Through this Multi-sport Court, Longfellow Elementary School, Foresters Financial and KaBOOM! are making a difference for kids and teens by providing a space where they can engage with their peers and enjoy a variety of sports and activity options. This project will ultimately give them a safe space where they feel they belong.
This Multi-Sport Court is part of a broader effort led by Foresters Financial and KaBOOM! to ensure communities have great PLAYces for kids and families. This investment in kids and teens shows that they matter and are supported by caring adults who want to ensure they are getting the opportunities they need to grow up happy and healthy.
