Robert Scheer: Above the Fold

A new feature length documentary about maverick journalist Robert Scheer will close the 8th Annual San Pedro International Film Festival on October 6th at the historic Warner Grand Theatre*, according to Festival Director Ziggy Mrkich

ROBERT SCHEER – ABOVE THE FOLD is a rewind through Scheer’s journalistic and activist career; the issues he championed, wars he opposed and the powerful political leaders he challenged. “I want to know who is getting screwed and who’s doing the screwing” he tells longtime friend and famed TV producer Norman Lear in one exchange featured in the 90 minute documentary.
Scheer worked at the progressive magazine Ramparts during the Vietnam War before spending thirty years at the Los Angeles Times. He was fired from the Times for opposing the Iraq War.

Scheer, who at 83 teaches at USC, is editor in Chief of Truthdig.com and does a weekly podcast, “Scheer Intelligence” for KCRW, will be on hand for the screening and a panel discussion to follow this Southern California Premiere.

Also participating are the filmmakers, Julie M. Thompson and Brogan de Paor, who made the film together, and Executive Producer Mike Farrell, of M*A*S*H and Providence Television fame.

When asked how the project came about, Ms. Thompson explained. “We have an on-line history project, the Activist Video Archive, where we compile long interviews with progressive people who have an activist bent in order to preserve and honor their work. About four hours into our interview with Bob, we knew it should be a film in its own right.”

Ms. Thompson, who counts among her credits Executive Producer of the Alexander Payne film NEBRASKA, which she brought to Hollywood, has partnered with Irish born filmmaker Brogan de Paor to create the Activist Video Archive. They have also worked with Farrell on many issues and media projects.
