Cypress School District expects to close escrow on new administrative headquarters

On September 10, 2019, the Cypress School District Board of Trustees approved the purchase of a commercial office building located at 5816 Corporate Avenue in Cypress which will serve as the new administrative headquarters for the Cypress School District.

“We are excited by the prospect of securing a central office facility that will provide much-needed meeting space for teacher professional development, student performances, and public meetings, and is accessible to people with disabilities. Additionally, the space meets essential safety codes and energy and water efficiency standards,” said Board President Sandra Lee.

Over the years, the Board of Trustees has pursued a number of options to address its aging district office, which was constructed over 50 years ago. In August, the Board became aware of a commercial office building for sale within the district’s boundaries. During the special meeting on September 10, the Board approved its purchase for $7,775,000.

“Purchasing an existing office building presents a multi-million dollar savings over the cost of constructing a new facility, which was estimated last year at approximately $15 million,” said Superintendent Anne Silavs. “Clearly, this is a cost-effective solution to meet the needs of our district staff, students, and families.”

“I look forward to the day that we are able to comfortably and responsibly accommodate large crowds for student performances, professional learning, and regional meetings of importance to our school operations,” said President Lee.

The district will use monies in its Special Reserve for Capital Outlay to make the purchase. Use of the Special Reserve is restricted to capital outlay projects such as facility upgrades and may not be used to fund student programs or staff salaries.

The district now has a 30-day due diligence period to conduct a variety of inspections and review building reports. Provided everything is satisfactory, escrow will close by October 3, 2019. It is anticipated the administrative offices will move to the new location by summer 2020.
