October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB), a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating domestic violence, is partnering with the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library to host its 13th Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month Event, The Next Chapter: Awareness. Community. Healing, on Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library located at 5870 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90805.
The primary focus of this free event is to raise awareness regarding domestic violence. We will also provide attendees with the information they need to identify the early warning signs of an abusive relationship and how to help those within their own communities who might be experiencing abuse. “The effects of domestic violence often reach beyond the family and out into the larger community. By increasing awareness and conversations about domestic violence within the community, we can help victims and their families overcome barriers to accessing the help and support they need” says Mary Ellen Mitchell, WomenShelter of Long Beach Executive Director.
This event is free and open to the public. Individuals, children and families will have the opportunity to participate in community art projects like making personalized bookmarks, special giveaways, visit tables where people can learn more about local supportive services, enjoy light refreshments, and much more!
Nearly 3 out of 4 individuals personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence. Domestic violence victims and survivors are members of our family, our friends, our loved ones, and our neighbors. With 1 out of 4 women and 1 out of 7 men having experienced domestic violence at some point in their life, it is important for us as a community to recognize the prevalence of domestic violence and find ways that we can lead with love by working together to advocate for change.
This community event is generously sponsored in part by the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, A Window Between Worlds, and End Abuse Long Beach. To learn more about WSLB’s DVAM event, please visit womenshelterlb.org. We hope to see you there!
