OCDA releases findings on custodial death of Alejandro Alvarez

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer released a report finding no evidence to charge officers in the suicide of Alejandro Alvarez while in the custody of Anaheim Police at the Department’s Anaheim detention facility.

Alvarez was arrested on March 14, 2019 for fleeing the scene of an accident and suspicion of driving under the influence. He refused voluntary blood and breath tests. Offiders placed him in a holding cell to wait while a warrant for a blood sample. Video surveillance of the holding cell shows that Alvarez strangled himself using the braided cord of a pay phone inside the holding cell.

Despite life-saving efforts by officers, paramedics, and emergency room personnel, Alvarez later died at a local hospital.
