Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris earns support of Sierra Club

Citing Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris’ record as a leader in protecting California’s environment and natural resources, Sierra Club California announced its support for her re-election campaign.

Sierra Club California Director Kathryn Phillips released the following statement announcing the endorsement:

“Those of us who are committed to fighting climate change and protecting our coastline have an ally in Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, and we need her in the State Assembly. Cottie understands the urgent crisis that we all face, which is why she authored AB 65. Signed into law just last month, AB 65 is critical legislation that will direct funding to green infrastructure projects to combat the effects of climate change along California’s coastline. Cottie is exactly the kind of legislator we need to fight for our communities, our state, and our planet.”

The Sierra Club is one of the nation’s oldest and largest environmental organizations. It was founded in 1892 by a group of Californians, including John Muir, who valued the state’s wilderness areas. The Sierra Club of California has 13 chapters, representing more than 400,000 members and supporters.

Cottie Petrie-Norris was elected to represent California’s 74th Assembly District in 2018. Over the course of her first year in office, she has had eleven bills signed into law, including important legislation to combat sea-level rise, improve services for veterans, expand access to birth control and save small business owners money. As part of the 2019-2020 State Budget, Petrie-Norris secured $4.5 million to help the Orange County Fire Authority’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance project to protect Southern California from wildfires and $2.9 million to end Veteran homelessness in Orange County.

Petrie-Norris serves as Chair of the Assembly’s Accountability and Administrative Review Committee and as Chair of the Select Committee on Student Debt. She also serves on the Assembly’s committees for Appropriations, Judiciary, Revenue and Taxation and Veterans Affairs.

After working her way through Yale University, where she double majored in Economics and English, Cottie Petrie-Norris had a successful 20-year career in finance and technology. She helped to build businesses and led teams at Fortune 500 corporations, small companies and start-ups.
