Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement after voting for H.R. 3224, the Deborah Sampson Act. Rep. Cisneros is a cosponsor of The Deborah Sampson Act, a bill that would provide increased access to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical care for women veterans and newborns of veterans. The legislation also would establish a comprehensive policy to combat sexual assault and harassment at VA facilities.
“Women servicemembers are the fastest growing cohort in our military community and they face unique healthcare needs related to their service,” said Rep. Cisneros. “I’m proud to support the Deborah Sampson Act to ensure women veterans receive access to the healthcare and support they deserve. It is our greatest duty as Americans to serve those who served us, and Congress must honor the promise we make to our women in uniform.”
Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran who serves on the House Veterans Affairs Committee and House Armed Services Committee. Earlier this year, Rep. Cisneros introduced the Helping Expand and Launch Transitional Health (HEALTH) for Women Veterans Act to extend a pilot program that educates transitioning servicewomen about women’s healthcare at the VA. He is also a member of the Servicewomen and Women Veterans Congressional Caucus and the Bipartisan Women Veterans Task Force.
