Orange Coast College Chamber Singers to perform passion projects for Fall showcase

he Orange Coast College Chamber Singers and OCC Chorale will join forces with a group of talented soloists to present a program of music for voices from all around the world on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. Featured works will include music by Brahms and Mendelssohn; folk and folk-influenced music from Norway, Brazil, South Africa, and the United States; a Broadway favorite and a new arrangement of a favorite Carly Simon tune; and an improvisatory piece based on the Great Barrier Reef.

Music for the program was chosen to reflect topics that members of the Chamber Singers identified as subjects they were passionate or concerned about. Some of the subjects represented in the “passion project” are the burning of the Amazon rain forest, the bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, and the availability of clean drinking water around the world.

“The usual order of things is that the director picks the music and tells the choir why it’s important,” says Director of Choral Activities Eliza Rubenstein. “But in this case, I decided to ask the singers what was important to them, and chose music accordingly. They came up with some wonderful and moving ideas, which in turn led us to some extraordinary repertoire that is both poignant and uplifting.”

The OCC Chamber Singers, OCC’s most elite performing ensemble, recently made their fourth appearance at Carnegie Hall under the baton of director Rubenstein. The OCC Chorale, led by Rubenstein and Eric Graham, is a melting pot of students and community members with a wide variety of backgrounds and majors.
