Lots of chatter across the Web over whether the Trojans beating the Bruins, 52-35, in the annual cross-town game has saved Clay Helton’s job as head coach.
Helton at least kept his job through the end of the game.
Words like “rout” were also used. I think that’s overwrought, considering that UCLA put 35 points on the scoreboard. If USC’s defense had held UCLA below 21 points while its offense piled up 52 points, I would call it a rout.
Speaking of piling up points — scoring across quarters was remarkably consistent if consistently in USC’s favor. Both teams scored in each quarter but the Trojans scored more than the Bruins each quarter but the second, when both teams racked up 14 points.
USC is done for the regular season, but poor bedraggled UCLA must still face Cal Berkeley.
