United States Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45) announced her support for Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris in her bid for re-election to the California State Assembly.
Congresswoman Porter released the following statement regarding her endorsement:
“I have seen Cottie’s hard work first hand — on the campaign trail, meeting with constituents, and working with her colleagues in Sacramento. In all of her work, Cottie is a tireless advocate for the people she serves. As a fellow mother, I know we share a deeper concern for the future of our community. She has shown this commitment through her work on legislation to protect California’s coastal communities and helping seniors in her district get the state services they rely on. I know she will continue to get things done for her constituents and I’m proud to support her re-election to the State Assembly.”
Elected in 2018, Congresswoman Katie Porter represents California’s 45th Congressional District. Porter is a consumer protection advocate and prior to her election taught law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. In March 2012, California Attorney General Kamala Harris appointed Porter to be the state’s independent monitor of banks in a nationwide $25 billion mortgage settlement. As monitor, she oversaw the banks’ implementation of $9.5 billion in settlement reforms for Californians.
Congresswoman Porter’s 45th district overlaps with Assemblywoman Petire-Norris’ 74th district; both leaders represent the cities of Irvine and Laguna Woods.
Cottie Petrie-Norris was elected to represent California’s 74th Assembly District in 2018. Over the course of her first year in office, she has had eleven bills signed into law, including important legislation to combat sea-level rise, improve services for veterans, expand access to birth control and save small business owners money. As part of the 2019-2020 State Budget, Petrie-Norris secured $4.5 million to help the Orange County Fire Authority’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance project to protect Southern California from wildfires and $2.9 million to end Veteran homelessness in Orange County.
Petrie-Norris serves as Chair of the Assembly’s Accountability and Administrative Review Committee and as Chair of the Select Committee on Student Debt. She also serves on the Assembly’s committees for Appropriations, Judiciary, Revenue and Taxation and Veterans Affairs.
After working her way through Yale University, where she double majored in Economics and English, Cottie Petrie-Norris had a successful 20-year career in finance and technology. She helped to build businesses and led teams at Fortune 500 corporations, small companies and start-ups.
Petrie-Norris lives in Laguna Beach with her husband, Colin, their two sons, Dylan and Hayden, and their rescue dog, Flounder.
