The top three Republican leaders in California have reaffirmed their support of Assemblyman Tyler Diep. The strong showing of support comes exactly one week after a primary challenge was launched on the last day of filing. In addition to reaffirming their support — California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Patterson, Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove and Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron — released the following statement:
“An unnecessary primary challenge in this district is nothing but a distraction and plays directly into the Democrat speaker’s playbook. Tyler has proven that he can win in a tough seat in suburban Orange County and it is likely he will do so again in 2020. We call on everyone who is committed to the party to put differences aside and join us in keeping this district Republican.”
Diep has been endorsed by the Orange County Republican Party, the California Republican Party and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association PAC. Diep was recently awarded a coveted Rose Award from the Orange County Taxpayers Association’s for his staunch opposition to tax increases.
Diep was elected to the Assembly in 2018 after one of the highest profile legislative campaigns in the state. Diep won in a swing district despite being outspent by more than 2 to 1 in the general election. The 72nd District includes all of Westminster, Garden Grove, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, a portion of Huntington Beach and the unincorporated county island of Midway City.
