Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement in response to the United States’ airstrike in Iraq that killed Iranian Quds Force Commander Major General Qasem Soleimani and several high-level Iraqi militia officials.
“Major General Qasem Soleimani was the architect of Iran’s proxy wars and unconventional warfare tactics that led to immense violence across the Middle East, from Lebanon and Syria to the Arabian Peninsula and Iraq. He is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American servicemembers and personnel, as well as thousands of civilians across the Middle East. While there is justice in his death, I am deeply concerned about how this attack was carried out and the absence of a clear strategy for managing the consequences.
“The Administration and the Department of Defense must immediately brief Congress on the rationale for carrying out this strike, what plans are in place to address the almost certain retaliatory actions to follow, and what strategy is in place in pursuit of U.S. interests. In particular, as the State Department has issued issuing a security alert urging U.S. citizens to depart Iraq immediately, I want to know what will be done to ensure the safety and security of U.S. servicemembers, civilian officials, and U.S. citizens, not only in the Middle East, but around the world.
“This Administration must show it is prepared to confront immediate threats to American personnel, and rather than rush into further armed conflict we must protect American lives and de-escalate tensions in the region.”
Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
