Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) voted on a bipartisan resolution to remove an arbitrary deadline previously set by Congress for the States to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which prohibits gender discrimination. Rep. Cisneros is an original cosponsor of H.J.Res.79.
“Even in 2020, 100 years after the 19th Amendment was ratified giving women the right to vote, women’s equality is still not guaranteed in our Constitution. We cannot accept this status quo. I join my Democratic and Republican colleagues in passing H.J.Res.79 and sending an unequivocal message that the United States of America prohibits gender discrimination. It’s far past time that we make the Equal Rights Amendment the 28th Amendment of our Constitution and guarantee that women and men are truly equal under the law. Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment means equal pay, equal access to healthcare, equal access to justice, and equality for all,” said Rep. Cisneros.
The ERA that passed the House and Senate with bipartisan majorities in 1971 and 1972 originally had a clause requiring it be ratified by 1979, which was later extended before it expired. By the end of 1982, 35 of the 38 required state legislatures had voted to ratify the ERA. Nevada ratified the ERA in 2017, Illinois in 2018 and, in January 2020, Virginia became the 38th state.
