Marketing and more: has Chick-fil-A chickened out from pro-faith stance?

At first glance, Chick-fil-A Restaurants would be a textbook case of insulting loyal customers to appease non-customers who loudly demanded fundamental changes to the international company’s brand.

Maybe it wasn’t appeasement. Maybe moving to the radical socialist left is part of Chick-fil-A’s recent marketing strategy to change its iconic brand from one that supports Christian faith values to supporting radical progressive socialist principles.

Chick-fil-A lurches to the left

For years, radical socialist leftists have chastised and mocked the very successful restaurant chain for its pledge to conduct business while upholding Christian values. For instance, the chain is not open on Sundays. Yet even though its restaurants are only open six days each week, sales often surpass many competing fast-food eateries that are open seven days a week.

This isn’t to say Chick-fil-A arrogantly tells customers how to live their lives, but it was believed that the privately held restaurant chain made decisions based on adhering to tenants of its faith. Not so much a marketing ploy but how founder S. Truett Cathy lived his personal and professional life, which his son Dan promised to continue.

Everything continued along for people who savored those delicious chicken sandwiches, curly fries and unique Chick-fil-A sauce… until 2012 when CEO Dan Cathy shared his personal thoughts about gay marriage. That’s when the “tolerant” left started its ongoing campaign against the successful restaurant chain.

In response, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee organized a National Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. All around the country, faithful customers waited on long lines to show they valued the restaurant chain and did not like that it was being bullied by LGBTQ+ activists. (Do most Americans even know what ALL the letters and the plus sign stand for?)

The situation continued for the next few years. Radical socialist leftists would protest at existing Chick-fil-A restaurants or riot at the prospect of a new facility opening while loyal customers supported the restaurant that helped it to achieve record-breaking sales.

Then in 2019, news broke that Chick-fil-A had spent the last few years tilting to the left and abandoning its Christian principles. In November 2019, Chick-fil-A announced it would no longer donate to Fellowship of Christian Athletes and The Salvation Army.

How could Chick-fil-A publicly profess that its Christian faith is inseparable from its business practices and yet abandon The Salvation Army, an organization that helps ANYONE in need? The Salvation Army doesn’t ask sexual orientation, religion, politics… they only ask how they can help you.

After Chick-fil-A’s announcement, The Salvation Army responded –

We serve more than 23 million individuals a year, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, we believe we are the largest provider of poverty relief to the LGBTQ+ population. When misinformation is perpetuated without fact, our ability to serve those in need, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or any other factor, is at risk.

Chick-fil-A’s imsulting decision was a colossal middle finger to its stalwart army of long-time loyal customers. Believing that the move was appeasement, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee said this about Chick-fil-A’s decision –

“Surrendering to critics and betraying loyal customers to appease those who despise them.”

Rod Dreher wrote in “The Culture War is Lost,” –

However, in US culture war terms, Chick-fil-A’s surrender really is a Germans-marching-down-the-Champs-Élysées moment for the right.

Was it appeasement?

To the dismay of its million of loyal, long-time customers, it appears this was not an act of appeasement, but rather support for anti-American left-leaning values. Those who had been following the corporation for many years were not surprised by its announcement to abandon support for Christian organizations. In “Chick-fil-A Was Already Moving Left, But Nobody Noticed Until it Caved to LGBT Lobby” Doug Mainwaring wrote a detailed article about how Chick-fil-A evolved into a pipeline of cash to leftist causes –

CFA fans wouldn’t have been caught by surprise if they had been paying close attention to the organization’s corporate structure, according to Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, writing at Frontpage Magazine. Many of the restaurant’s loyal patrons assumed that CFA was different from other large corporations and that it continued to be guided by a biblical vision. They were wrong. The corporation was slowly evolving away from its Christian principles, but CFA wasn’t about to broadcast that.

Change began in 2011, when Rodney Bullard joined the company as VP of Corporate Responsibility and Executive Director of the Chick-fil-A Foundation to handle charitable giving. According to Federal Election Commission records, Bullard donated to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama when they were presidential candidates.

Does that sound like the type of person who would fit in with the supposed Christian corporation?

IRS records also show that Chick-fil-A began quietly funding left-leaning pro-abortion organizations including the hateful and divisive Southern Poverty Law Center.

It has also been reported that the company funds the DC-based New Leadership Council that identifies as a “hub of progressive millennial thought leadership” which exists to “support one another along their individual path to more progressive political and cultural landscape.”

There are other examples online that illustrate Chick-fil-A’s leftist lurch.

Yikes! Do you want ketchup with your progressive spicy chicken sandwich?

Beyond customer disappointment, it’s very upsetting for franchise owners who thought they were purchasing a restaurant that adhered to right-leaning, pro-faith values and having that appear to no longer be the company’s foundation.

Chicken sandwich smothered with socialism

Many wondered why Chick-fil-A wants to lurch to the left when the company is so successful with its strong and supportive faith-based customer base? As Dreher said in that same article –

Yet the company’s business has not suffered. To the contrary, it has more than doubled since 2012 and in the US lags behind only McDonald’s and Starbucks in sales (this, despite that fact that the Cathy family mandates Sunday closure). The reason is obvious to anyone who has eaten at a Chick-fil-A. The food is delicious, the stores immaculately clean and the staff legendarily courteous. What’s more, Chick-fil-A is known for generous pay and benefits to its employees, something uncommon in the fast-food industry.

Now the question to ask is: Are conservatives as committed to their core beliefs as radical socialist leftists are to theirs? Or have the same conservatives who posted angry missives on social media in November 2019 back to dining at Chick-fil-A?

“Ah come on! How can my eating one chicken sandwich every week hurt the fight against radical socialists?”

The answer is simple: your one order multiplied by millions of other orders tells Chick-fil-A they can offensively insult its large conservative pro-faith customer base since those same folks will foolishly continue eating at the restaurant.

As Rebecca Hagelin wrote in “Chick-fil-A Needs Saving in Battle it’s Losing from Within” –

As the disturbing facts have continued to unfold, it is becoming painfully evident that the company is in the midst of collapsing from within. What the enemies of Chick-fil-A and freedom could not do, Chick-fil-A is rapidly doing to itself.

There’s no other way to put it: If you are a conservative of faith and still dining at Chick-fil-A, you are part of the problem!

If conservatives are too weak to go without a chicken sandwich, they shouldn’t complain in the not-too-distant future at President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s inauguration. Of course, these same conservatives will be able to watch the ceremony at a nearby Chick-fil-A while munching on their chicken sandwich and curly fries.

  2. YES!!!

  3. so sad they care more about what others think rather than what God thinks. I’m not supporting them anymore.
i hope Saddleback Church cancels there sales on campus.

  4. Robin:
Thank you for another well researched and informative column. I don’t understand how a company, with Christian standards, could hire someone like Rodney Bullard to such a high-ranking position. I also don’t understand how no one at Chick-fil-A ever thought to check on his background prior to hiring him, and then failed to follow up on Bullard. I feel betrayed and I have a sense of sadness for this company because I believe that they, too , have been betrayed.
Thanks again for another wonderful article.

  5. Right on with your article. It seems Chick-fil-A wants everyone to think they are wrapped in the Christian flag while working with the devil. They are now just a phony corporation.
