Harley Rouda issues statement on Costa Mesa COVID-19 Treatment Center

Congressman Harley Rouda (CA-48) released the following statement in response to the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) and the Health and Human Services (HHS) Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) potentially using the Costa Mesa Fairview Development Center as a treatment center for individuals testing positive for COVID-19.

“Protecting the health and well-being of Californians should be a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local officials,” said Rouda. “Unfortunately — the Trump and Newsom Administrations failed to adequately communicate with the City of Costa Mesa and its elected officials. They decided our voices, expertise, and collaboration were not worth consideration.”

“The Orange County community deserves answers; Why here? Why now? How many patients will be transferred? How many more are projected? When can we expect this transfer? What is the public health and safety plan?”

“The Trump Administration’s lack of leadership, communication, organization, and quite frankly, common-sense puts our community at risk. I thank Mayor Katrina Foley and leaders in Costa Mesa for their work to ensure we receive answers to these questions immediately and hope County officials will follow their example.”

“I will keep fighting to ensure the Administration answers our questions — and intend to hold them accountable for this reckless public health fire drill. Amidst this chaos, I remain confident in our talented public health officials and want Orange County families to know we are working tirelessly to ensure our community stays healthy and safe.”

“Misinformation about the coronavirus is being disseminated at a rapid rate via traditional and social media channels. It’s on all of us to work together to stay informed and fight fear-mongering.”

Key points from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding COVID-19:

  • Currently, the seasonal flu poses a greater health risk to Americans than COVID-19.
  • Imported cases of COVID-19 in travelers have been detected in the U.S. Person-to-person spread of COVID-19 also has been seen among close contacts of returned travelers from Wuhan, but at this time, this virus is NOT currently spreading in the community in the United States.
  • The U.S. government has taken unprecedented steps related to travel in response to the growing public health threat posed by this new coronavirus, including suspending entry in the United States of foreign nationals who have visited China within the past 14 days.
  • While the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time, everyone can do their part to help us respond to this emerging public health threat.
  • If you are a healthcare provider, be on the look-out for people who recently traveled from China and have fever and respiratory symptoms.
  • If you are a healthcare provider caring for a COVID-19 patient or a public health responder, please take care of yourself and follow recommended infection control procedures.
  • If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, and tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a COVID-19 patient.
  • For people who are ill with COVID-19, please follow CDC guidance on how to reduce the risk of spreading your illness to others.

  1. To Radical Socialist Democrats like Harley Rouda, the answer is always that it’s President Trump’s fault. Can’t you get a new excuse?
