At their regular Tuesday meeting, the Lakewood City Council took action on two coronavirus-related matters that many cities in California are also taking.
The council approved a temporary moratorium, through the end of May, on residential and commercial tenant evictions due to a documented lack of financial resources related to the coronavirus. Tenants are still liable for the back rent, but have 180 days to make full payment. Governor Newsom recently gave cities the authority to approve such moratoriums as part of his coronavirus emergency orders. The text of the Lakewood ordinance can be viewed here.
The council also ratified the proclamation of a state of local emergency in Lakewood. The proclamation accelerates emergency planning and allows for future reimbursement by the state and federal governments for Lakewood’s coronavirus-related expenses.
