Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition offers tips for safety while riding

We hope by now you have been able to stock up and settle in for the next few weeks. Our team has been continuing our efforts to increase opportunities for safe riding by working with the City of LA and the County to increase availability of a bikeable network of streets to help people get to their “essential jobs” and to make sure that bike shops get classified as “essential businesses” in order to ensure riders have a place to seek mechanical assistance. We are fortunate that the City of LA had the foresight to include bike shops from the very beginning and, with our encouragement, the County has seen fit to add bike shops as “essential businesses” to their guidance. You can still help at the state level by signing this CalBike petition to encourage the State to update it’s guidance as well.

In addition, we are also working with a number of bike shops, co-ops, and advocates in order to try to make bikes available to those who need them as a means of transportation. We recognize that some folks are struggling to find a better way to get to their “essential jobs” and we wanted to create an additional option. If you, or someone you know, are in need of a bike for transportation purposes or for getting around your neighborhood for essential trips, stay tuned and we hope to have an update for you soon.

For those who are able to get out to ride, we want to remind you to take extra precautions. Doctors are indicating that 30-60 minutes of brisk physical activity can help boost the immune system. If you take appropriate precautions, a bit of exercise is still important to maintaining your overall health.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe while riding:

  • Stay home if you are feeling even mildly unwell
  • Bring plenty of snacks and water in order to avoid needing to come in contact with public fixtures, such as at drinking fountains
  • Maintain more than a 6-ft distance as you are traveling at speed
  • Avoid riding in groups
  • Give extra distance when passing or be prepared to slow down to make sure to maintain sufficient separation
  • Avoid going out at peak times in order to reduce crowding on trails and paths, especially as certain trails and paths are now closed
  • Please make sure to observe all closures and do not attempt to ride on closed trails and paths
  • Finally, please make sure to be extra careful and not take risks at this time; our healthcare providers are already overwhelmed and the last thing they need is to have additional patients to take care of

We want to encourage all riders to practice an abundance of caution as they continue to ride safely to maintain their physical, mental, and emotional well-being and also to take necessary steps to protect the health and safety of our entire community.

Finally, we cannot stress enough to make sure to stay informed on your local health officials’ latest updates and to limit your exposure as best as possible.
