Weekly message from Pastor Mike: See the smile of God

Psalm 139:13-14 For You (God) formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.

God personally and individually handcrafted us, (see Ephesians 2:10) every detail and feature of our being. He sat back and I can imagine a satisfied and loving smile come across His face as He exclaimed, “Wonderful!” God is perfect and His creations are amazing and beautiful. Look at an orchid, how intricate and dazzling. Look at the variety of birds and creatures, all unique and creatively designed. Yet we are more valuable to God than these.

Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save;He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love;He will exult over you with loud singing.

Us humans have been crowned by God with glory and designed exclusively in His image to care for and lead our world.

Psalms 8:5 Yet you have made him (humanity) a little lower than the heavenly beings and
crowned him with glory and honor.
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Can you see the smile of God? Can you see the smile of God for you?

We have been using Facetime to connect with our kids and grandkids. It’s wonderful to see their faces. While Facetiming the other day, one of our granddaughters called out, “Where’s Papa?” That’s me. So, I moved over so she could see me and smiled big at her. A huge, full-face smile came over her. Even her eyes were smiling. Naturally, I smiled back and even thinking about it brings on a smile. She smiled because she knows her Papa loves her and wants to be with her and brings her little blessings, like chocolate. Now sure there have been times I have had to be firm with her, which is an even deeper expression of love. Yet she knows my smile and loves to connect and be together, even if it’s over Facetime, because of what is behind that smile. She knows I care because I care for her needs. She knows I think highly of her because I affirm her. She knows I love her because I tell her and show her by being patient, kind, and caring (see 1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

Now sure, I am not perfect and mess up all the time. But God does not, and He continues to show us love. Do you see His smile? Much of it is through others. Some is through the little miracles we experience each day. Other times, His smile is seen in and through His Word, the Bible.

Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;I will strengthen you, I will help you,I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Romans 5:8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Psalms 86:15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
Psalms 103:13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

Do you see the smile of God? It’s there. No matter what has happened in the past or even your current circumstances like this coronavirus crisis, God is smiling at you. What is your response? He longs to connect with you and have you enjoy the peace, comfort, and help of His presence. Just call out to Him and seek Him.

Psalms 145:18 The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.

Church can be a great place to experience the smile of God. If you don’t already have an online Sunday church gathering or would like to try ours, we would like to invite you to Neighborhood Church/Cypress Church (same church, same heart, just a new name). We have two campuses; our website has all the information you would need. Every Sunday we learn from the Bible and seek to know God more, and pray. Here is the link to our live-streaming services (seelive.neighborhoodchurch.com) As well, if you would like to view any of our past worship gatherings visit our YouTube channel.
