Steel reiterates call for full repeal of AB 5

Today, Michelle Steel, congressional candidate and Chair of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, reiterated her call for the state to repeal AB5 as reports surface the state assembly may be poised to start exempting certain industries.

“COVID-19 has devastated our small business community and independent workers in Orange County,” Steel said. “The state has already admitted the failures of AB5 by exempting certain industries; creating more exemptions at this time adds insult to injury. Legislators should make the responsible decision and fully repeal this jobs-killing legislation as we attempt to get back on our feet.”

Reports today indicate that AB5’s lead sponsor in the Assembly has negotiated exemptions for certain sectors of the music industry while ignoring other critical fields that are struggling, particularly during COVID-19.

“This week, Orange County established guidelines to help businesses safely begin the process of reopening, but bills like AB5 are holding our independent workers back – it should be repealed immediately, Steel said.”
