Janet Nguyen launches online petition to call for the opening of nail salons immediately

Last Friday Governor Gavin Newsom announced that schools, gyms, professional sports and bars could begin opening this week. Nail Salons were singled out to not be included in the opening.

“While I support the openings of all of these organizations and businesses, schools, pro sports, gyms and bars will naturally attract large gatherings while nails salons are a business with a 1 to 1 ratio between customer and nail technician,” said former State Senator Janet Nguyen.

“Governor Newsom has not only doubled down on his previous statement that nail salons were responsible for the spread of COVID-19 in California, he has never apologized for his comment or presented any evidence to prove his statement. Now it is very clear that he has specifically targeted nail salons that led to the closure of thousands of nail salons and put tens of thousands of nail technicians out of work in our state. Eighty percent of nail salon owners and workers in California are Vietnamese-Americans and the nail salon industry is the largest employer for Vietnamese refugees in the state.”

Former Senator Janet Nguyen was first to call for the Governor to apologize and request evidence to prove that a nail salon was responsible for the spread of COVID-19 in California. In response excluding nail salons in the re-opening orders Janet Nguyen has set up an online petition asking individuals from around the state to demand an apology from the Governor.

“Today, I am asking Californians to sign the online petition to send a message to Governor Newsom that we want the nail salons to be included in the opening stage with the bars, gyms, pro sports and schools.

“I’m calling for the Governor to finally do the right thing and allow nail salons to open immediately and start the process of recovery. Our local entrepreneurs have endured so much with business shutdowns and statewide restrictions, many without any assistance from the State. To be treated as second class when all they want is to reopen their shops is just plain wrong. The continued punishment against nail salons will devastate the entire Vietnamese American community in California which depend on these small businesses to provide for their families. We aren’t going to take this lying down. That’s why I started the online petition, I want to give a collective voice to those not only offended by his previous comments but also the obvious punishment against the Vietnamese American community and demand the immediate opening of nail salons.”
