Backed by a large coalition of elected officials and community members, Kim Bernice Nguyen officially launches her bid for re-election.
In 2016, Kim made history as the first person of Latinx descent and the youngest person ever elected to the Garden Grove City Council. In the past four years, Kim has delivered on her promises to bring more effective representation to East Garden Grove. Kim has worked closely with the city’s Public Works Department to bring much needed infrastructure projects to East Garden Grove, led the effort to negotiate a Community Workforce Agreement with the LA/OC Building Trades Council to bring prevailing wage jobs that prioritize local hire, and brought community concerts and movie nights to East Garden Grove for the first time.
“I am proud of the work we have done to bring representation to East Garden Grove after years of being forgotten. We have also worked diligently to shed light on important issues within our community. I am inspired by the reckoning we are witnessing occur in our City. I respectfully ask for your vote to be able to stand alongside you as we continue to fight to bring social awareness and equity to our District and City. These next four years I pledge to continue to advocate for funding and grants to improve our parks and infrastructure and most importantly to work with the community and the City to continue building trust and accountability.”
– Councilwoman Kim Nguyen
“It has been an honor to serve with Kim these past four years. Dating back to when we fought for representation through district elections, I witnessed her devotion to equity and her natural ability to lead. On the Council, she has been a consensus builder and always seeks to reach across the aisle to build coalitions to make our City stronger.”
– Councilwoman Thu Ha Nguyen
Kim has built a strong coalition of supporters including Congressman Lou Correa, Senator Tom Umberg, Assemblyman Tom Daly, Garden Grove City Councilwoman Thu Ha Nguyen, Santa Ana City Councilman David Penaloza, Costa Mesa City Councilmembers Manny Chavez and Andrea Marr, Buena Park City Councilman Connor Traut, Tustin Mayor Pro Tem Letitia Clark, Irvine City Councilwoman Farrah Khan, Garden Grove Unified School District Trustee Walter Muneton, Anaheim Elementary School District Trustee Mark Lopez, and Fullerton School District Trustee Jeanette Vazquez. Kim has built strong working relationships with leaders throughout Orange County in order to ensure Garden Grove has their seat at the table and bring back funds to improve our parks and streets.
Councilwoman Nguyen has called Garden Grove home since the age of 10. She attended Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary, Doig Intermediate, and Santiago High School. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in politics and a minor in legal studies. She is the first in her family to graduate high school and receive a college degree.
The sixth Council District includes the eastern most portion of Garden Grove, and includes the neighborhoods around Santiago High School, Woodbury Park and Christ Cathedral.
