Janet Nguyen is taking action upon learning that convicted child molester Cary Jay Smith moved into a Motel 6 in Garden Grove after being held in a state mental institution in Garden Grove and she is demanding Governor Gavin Newsom to take action. Smith has been on psychiatric hold at a state mental hospital since 2002 when his wife turned over evidence that he fantasized about molesting neighborhood children after he served his sentence in another incident.
“Cary Jay Smith has stated he will molest again after he was released in the past. Now he has decided to relocate to Garden Grove, but Cary Jay Smith is not welcome in our community,” said Janet Nguyen. “We must do everything we can to protect the public and especially our children. The public deserves answers about why he isn’t at the very least required to register as a sex offender. The Governor has widely used his executive authority to shut down our economy, surely he can get answers from a state mental hospital on why Cary Jay Smith was released. At the very least the Governor has the authority to reinstate the requirement that Smith has to register as a sex offender. The Governor has remained silent on this matter and that is unacceptable, the public deserves answers. The Governor can’t sit back and do nothing when he has the power to protect the public especially our children.”
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Cary Jay Smith was convicted of a sex offense against a child in 1985 and that should have required him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Janet Nguyen is encouraging citizens to sign an online petition to require Cary Jay Smith to register as a sex offender that has already collected more than 24,000 signatures.
